History of the Secession Oak

Did you know that South Carolina was the first to withdraw from the Union? Back in 1844,

Congressman Robert Barnwell Rhett gathered under a large oak tree (later to be named the "Secession Oak") with approximately 500 others. Congressman Rhett spoke about problems facing South Carolina after Congress passed the Tariff of 1842 which led to the Bluffton Movement and ultimately for the state to secede from the Union in 1860. Interestingly, this year on February 1st (National Freedom Day), the trees heavy limbs caused it to collapse. In an interview with the Island Packet, the owner of the Burnt Church Distillery, Billy Waterson, was quoted as saying, "The tree has fallen and what it stood for is no more."
